In the first season under David Knight, the Albany softball team put up a solid showing on the Louisiana Sportswriters Association’s Class 3A Baseball and Softball teams released Tuesday.

Albany placed four players on the team, led by pitcher Brittney Turner, who went 19-7 for the Lady Hornets.

“She was pretty solid hitting the ball, and she came through in big games, big situations,” Knight said. “I was very excited for her. She’s a solid pitcher. She deserves to be on there.”

A trio of Lady Hornets – Kaci Payne, Madison Knight and Heather Degenhardt – were honorable mention selections.

“All four of those girls batted over .400 this year,” David Knight said. “They were all very solid. “When you look at it as a coach, those are some of the ones that produced for you day in and day out.”

“We’re always excited when we get players on that level. Those girls have been consistent all year in the field, at the plate. I’m just excited for all of them.”

Kaylee Lopez of North Vermilion was selected the team’s Most Valuable Player, while Josh Schrader of Crowley was chosen Coach of the Year.

Hunter Wriborg of Iota was the MVP of the baseball team, while Berwick’s Brandon Bravata was selected Coach of the Year after guiding the Panthers to the Class 3A state title.
