A byproduct of one of the best regular seasons in Walker High football history was illustrated Sunday with the release of the Class 5A All-State team by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association.
Three key members – senior strong safety BJ Lockhart, sophomore wide receiver Brian Thomas and junior wide receiver/punt returner Jalen Cook – were all selected Class 5A All-State honorable mention after helping the Wildcats to an 8-3 record, first round of the state playoffs and runners-up finish in District 4-5A.
“The kids are well deserving,” Walker coach Cecil Thomas said. “They’re very good at what they do. I’m very proud of the kids. It’s a very big honor when you consider all the good players we have in Louisiana. No matter if it’s first team or honorable mention, it’s an honor to be on that list because the talent level’s so good here. It helps our other kids strive to be in their shoes.”
Two-time defending state champion Zachary led the way with five first-team choices, topped by Offensive Player of the Year: quarterback Keilon Brown.
Evangel Christian’s Elijah Chatman was voted Defensive Player of the Year and East Ascension’s Darnell Lee is Coach of the Year.
Lockhart, a two-time All-District 4-5A first-team selection and the 2018 All-Livingston Parish Defensive MVP, served as Walker’s emotional leader.
Lockhart topped the Wildcats with 79 tackles, two tackles for loss and two interceptions. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 68 carries for 525 yards and six touchdowns.
“BJ sets a great example for Walker High, to work hard and to try and do things right,” Thomas said. “A lot of our kids look up to BJ and what he’s done through the years. To get recognition is big for our young kids and to set their goals and be where they want to be.
“BJ’s one of the hardest-working kids we had in the weight room and the other kids saw that,” Thomas said. “He’s got God-given athletic ability and at the same time, the kid worked his tail off to be better. He’s a program kid. He’s just been a real fun kid to coach and watch his progression over the last few years.”
In his first varsity season, the 6-foot-4 Thomas exploded onto the scene with a team-best 50 catches for 1,079 yards and eight touchdowns.
Cook was right behind with 47 receptions for 624 yards and nine touchdowns. He also excelled on special teams with an average of 37.5 yards on 10 returns and two touchdowns.
“Brian’s ability is through the roof,” Thomas said. “He’s going to get better and better every year, the same thing with Jalen. He (Cook) improved from a year ago. Our numbers were spread around pretty good and you can’t defend both of them. If you tried to take one away the other one’s going to come up big.”
