HAMMOND -- French Settlement simply ran into a buzzsaw against St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday night at Austin Brooks Field.
The Falcons scored five runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings and John Blanchard threw a one-hitter as STA cruised to a 10-0 win over the Lions in 5 innings.
“They do a good job of finding your weakness and going after it,” FSHS coach Jaime Gautreau said. “They’re good enough without giving them anything and then when we give anything to them, it just snowballs. They’re the best 2A team I’ve seen in a while.
“We knew it was to be probably the three toughest games we played all year and it was. Our district is so tough. There are really no layups.”
The Falcons got started early, scoring five runs on four hits in the 1st inning.
Sam Smith had a two-run double, Ryan Dawsey knocked in another run on a single when no one covered the bag at first base and Blaine Jacob had a two-run double to left field for a 5-0 lead.
“I think that’s us in a nutshell,” STA coach Barrett Morgan said of the fast start. “I tell the guys all the time, if we can start fast, when we get going, we’re a pretty well-oiled machine.”
The Falcons (23-4, 6-0 District 10-2A) padded the lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning with five more runs as Alex Egan pumped a one-out double to left-center field, stole third base and scored on a wild pitch for a 6-0 lead.
Another run scored on an error, Dawsey had a two-run double to left field for a 9-0 lead and Jacob’s sacrifice fly to right field made the score 10-0.
The Lions (10-10, 1-5), who left six runners on base, got their lone hit on Brant Smiley’s two-out single to left field in the 2nd inning.
After STA’s scoring barrage, Lions’ starter Gannon Allison allowed just one hit over the final 2 innings.
“I calmed myself down and Coach talked to me a little bit,” Allison said of the final 2 innings. “He told me I needed to relax. I calmed down and I started hitting my spots and putting the ball in play and my teammates made the plays that they did.”
Allison gave up nine hits, two walks and struck out two in 4 innings.
“With the two JV games that we played, we had pretty much three pitchers for this game, and we knew we were going to have to go pretty deep,” Gautreau said. “I kind of wanted to save (Brice Fruge) for next week so I could set him up for the playoffs.”
Blanchard, who struck out three and walked four in 5 innings, walked Jonas LeBourgeois and Fruge to lead off the 4th inning, but the Falcons turned a 4-6-3 double play and Allison grounded out to second base to end the inning.
Brody Bell and Ben Andrews walked in the 5th inning, but the Lions were unable to cash in as Bryant Johnson flied out to left field to end the game.
