Janis Peggy Hess DePriest.JPG

Janis Peggy Hess DePriest of Albany, Louisiana, went to her heavenly home on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018. Born to George and Martha (Stewart) Hess on Sunday, Aug. 11, 1935, at the Hess family home in north Albany, she left that same plot of land at the age of 83, having passed away at her residence. She found great joy in caring for her husband Philip, and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be dearly missed by family and friends. She retired from the Livingston Parish School System after teaching for 33 years. In her retirement years, she wrote a column for the Hammond Daily Star to share news and history of the Albany community. She also enjoyed traveling and listening to bluegrass music with her husband Philip. A lifelong member of Old Zion Hill Baptist Church, she was a devoted servant of the Lord, having taught Sunday school for many years and as an active member of the Women on Missions, as well as many other church activities. As witnessed by the tattered pages of her Bible, Janis lived life with dignity and compassion, loved giving of her time and energy to educating and caring for others, and always turned to His word and teachings for guidance. A true servant of the Lord and matriarch of her family, she lived a beautiful Christian life and led by example. Janis is survived by her daughter, Donna Sue DePriest Hoover; son, Jeffery Wayne DePriest; sisters-in-law, Vera DePriest, Sarah DePriest Wilder, Carolyn DePriest Kinchen and husband Bruce; brothers-in-law, Allie DePriest and wife Betty Ann, Floyd DePriest and wife Barbara; grandchildren, Jennifer Terral, Janice DePriest Luther and her husband Marshall, Nicholas Stilley DePriest; as well as great-grandchildren, Landon Reese Guillory, Lauren Leigh Guillory, and Konnor Brees Weiss. Janis is preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Philip Don DePriest; son, Rodney Don DePriest; parents, George Hess and Martha Stewart Hess; brother, Valmond Joseph Hess, his wife Mary Ann Hess, and their infant daughter, Deanna Hess; brothers-in-law, Wallace Ray DePriest, Warren Wilder; nephews, Larry DePriest, Jerry DePriest, and Bruce Kinchen. Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, at Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, Hammond from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. Visitation will resume at Old Zion Hill Baptist Church, Independence, on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018 from 10 a.m. until the Celebration of Life Service at 12 p.m. Bro. Gary Dennis will officiate the services with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Condolences and other information are available online at www.thompsoncares.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home.
