FRENCH SETTLEMENT – Two issues related to the August 2016 flood will highlight the first meeting of 2019 for the Board of Aldermen on Jan. 9.

Mark Harrell, director of the Livingston Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, will discuss the progress related to the flood recovery and answer questions from residents at the meeting.

The village – a traditionally flood-prone area – took in more than eight feet of water in the historic flood. Approximately two feet of water seeped into the town hall, which remained out of service more than two years.

Mayor Toni B. Guitreau will also seek board approval for purchase of a Chevrolet Tahoe for the village police department. The vehicle would replace a unit destroyed in the flood.

Flooding destroyed two units, one of which the village replaced last year.

The board will also discuss safety issues at two intersections in the village.

The intersection of La. 42 near La. 16 (near Moonlight Inn) poses the greatest concern, Guitreau said.

“We often have people who will turn from La. 16 to La. 42 but turn in to the wrong lane because they can’t see the lines,” she said.

The village installed flashing lights along the curve, but the visibility remains an issue, Guitreau said.

The discussion will also focus on ways to slow down traffic at the La. 16/La. 444 intersection.

The meeting at Town Hall begins at 6 p.m.
