Harry Brignac

LIVINGSTON -- French Settlement Police Chief Harry Brignac entered a "not guilty" plea on a malfeasance in office charge during an arraignment hearing Wednesday in 21st Judicial District Court.

Brignac returns to court Oct. 15 for a motion of discovery hearing, which can involve interrogatories, requests of documents and inspection, requests for admission and depositions. 21st Judicial District Court Judge David Hughes will preside.

The arrest stemmed from Brignac’s alleged use of a town fleet fuel card to purchase gas for his personal pickup truck May 15. He allegedly made a 24-gallon fuel purchase – at a total cost of $60.00 – at a convenience store on La. 16 in French Settlement, according to Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard.

Brignac turned himself over to the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office on malfeasance in office and injuring public records – both felony charges. He was also charged with one count of misdemeanor theft.

Attorney Sherman Mack, who is representing Brignac, believes his client has a plausible and reasonable explanation, and understands the process.

"Hopefully, they will be satisfied with it and they'll find no wrongdoing," Mack said. "There's a lot of gray area here, not just a black-and-white issue.

"At the end of the day, when everything comes to light, we feel like it will be shown there was not intentional wrongdoing -- and the real question is intent," he said.

Brignac, 71, has served 34 years as French Settlement Police Chief.
