DENHAM SPRINGS – The Leadership Livingston Class of 2019 was introduced at the Livingston Parish Chamber of Commerce’s annual State of the Parish Message on Wednesday, Aug. 8.

Chamber officials also announced a new initiative to promote community pride and support parish businesses.

A total of 28 applicants from the fields of parish and municipal governments, banking, insurance, real estate, health and construction were accepted.

“The Chamber has several big initiatives each year. An important one is the leadership program,” said John Blount, chairman of the board of directors. “You travel the parish and you get educated about the parish.”

“You have to know how relevant and important Leadership Livingston is to the parish,” added April Wehrs, CEO/president of the Chamber of Commerce. “It creates ambassadors for the parish.”

The class will tour Livingston Parish, learn how it operates, what the parish faces in the future and what its needs are today. The 28 members will be divided into groups that will choose and carry on a public service project.

Meanwhile, a Chamber initiative that began three years ago is being adapted to a new focus, Wehrs said.

In 2015, the Chamber launched the initiative “Love Livingston Parish. Shop Livingston Parish,” she said.

Wehrs unveiled “Love Livingston Parish,” which will promote “Everything from positive aspects of the parish to things we can all improve on, like litter and other initiatives,” according to a placard distributed at the meeting.

“We’re now moving forward with the litter initiative of John Blount,” she added. “It’s going to highlight all the good things in Livingston Parish.

“We’re hoping you join us in a collective effort to show our love for Livingston Parish,” she said.

Wehrs said the Chamber also is looking for volunteers to help several of its programs:

--Three open seats on the Livingston Young Professionals Council.

--Three open seats on the Leadership Livingston Alumni Council.

--The Ambassador program is being revamped and is looking for volunteers to meet new businesses in the parish and answer questions.

Nominations also are being sought for the Livingston Parish Women’s Leadership Award that will be presented Sept. 20 at the Women’s Leadership Special Event.
