Pine Grove Baptist Church in Livingston celebrated the 100th birthday for longtime member Alvin Allan Martin.

Alvin, a “born and raised” Livingston Parish native, was born Oct. 12, 1917, and started attending Pine Grove Baptist around the time he married his wife, Elma Louise Wells (now deceased), on June 22, 1940.

Together, Alvin and Elma brought two sons into the world, Wilbert Ray Martin and Donnie Glen Martin (now deceased).

Five generations of the Martin family attended Sunday’s birthday celebration, which took place in the church’s gymnasium. Special guests included: son, Wilbert Martin and spouse Candina; grandsons Wade Martin, Wynn Martin and Dakota Martin; great-great grandchildren Wyatt Martin, Connor Martin and Madison Martin; nephew Ervin Martin and close friend Jimmy Dixon.

Another special guest was Alvin’s first cousin Milton McNabb, 92. The cousins, who rarely get the chance to see each other nowadays, are the oldest surviving members of the McNabb family.

All 28 tables inside Pine Grove Baptist Church’s gym were filled as more than 100 guests celebrated Alvin’s milestone. Dishes such as jambalaya, beef stew, lasagna, chicken, finger sandwiches and more were served. There were also six cakes of different flavors near the entrance and another set of tables with more sweet desserts near the entrees.
