COVINGTON -- After coming up empty on the first day of the Hannan Tournament, Live Oak made up for it on Day 2.
The Lady Eagles closed the tournament with comfortable victories over Northshore and Hammond on Saturday, mildly erasing the sting of Friday night’s one-run loss to Mandeville.
This weekend’s showcase in Covington was the first action for Live Oak since the Alexandria Senior High Classic last weekend. The Lady Eagles were scheduled to play on the road against Catholic of Pointe Coupee on Tuesday before opening District 4-5A play at home against Central on Thursday, but both games were rained out.
The rust from the unexpected layoff showed at the plate in Live Oak’s 4-3 loss to Mandeville, a second one-run defeat to the Lady Skippers this season. The Lady Eagles batted went 6-for-30 as a team against Mandeville and finished with their second-lowest total this season on the way to their second consecutive loss and third in four games.
Live Oak returned to form with big wins on Saturday, dropping Northshore 7-3 before pouncing on Hammond 8-1. The Lady Eagles racked up 17 and 10 hits, respectively, in the two games.
Nearing the halfway point of the regular season, Live Oak returns to the diamond with a pair of home games this week against Parkview Baptist at 5 p.m. Tuesday and crosstown rival Denham Springs High at 5 p.m. Thursday in Live Oak’s belated district opener. The Lady Eagles will also take part in the Sulphur Tournament next weekend.
