PINEVILLE -- Natalie Parker put Denham Springs High in position for a Class 5A playoff stunner Monday night at Pineville.
But the Lady Jackets weren’t able to get the three outs they needed in the bottom of the 7th inning as the Lady Rebels forged a tie and then scored the game-winner in the 8th of a 4-3 win in the opening round.
Adelle Chapman’s line-drive single to center fielder scored Maddie Evers for the win as Pineville (15-14) advanced to the second round by handing DSHS (12-19) a second playoff-opening loss in a row.
Parker slammed a one-out home run to center field in the 7th inning to give the Lady Jackets their first lead of the game, 3-2.
But the Lady Rebels answered when Maddie Clark homered with one out in the bottom of the last inning of regulation.
Denham went down in order in the top of the 8th inning against Pineville pitcher Abby Robertson and Pineville got to DSHS’ Layne Miley for the winning run.
Evers the Lady Rebels in front in the 1st inning with a two-run double, Pineville’s third hit in a row to begin the game. Miley settled in and retired 16 of the ensuing 18 batters before Clark’s clutch homer.
The Lady Jackets climbed back to even with single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings.
Bailey Hughes pounded a one-out double in the 3rd, stole third and sprinted home on Parker’s sharp grounder to third base.
In the 4th, Paige Luquette drew a leadoff walk, Allison Irby bunted her into scoring position and Rayne Minor delivered a big two-out double to center to knot the score, 2-2.
With the win, the Lady Rebels avenged a 7-5 loss to Denham in a tournament on March 18. DSHS had also been a thorn on Pineville’s side in the playoffs, winning 14-13 in the second round in 2015 and 12-8 in the state semifinals in 2014.
