LAFAYETTE -- Shutdown innings are a big thing in baseball.

When Denham Springs High ace Brock Batty was unable to hang one up Thursday against a desperate Lafayette High team, that came back and bit the Yellow Jackets.

The Lions answered a four-run DSHS top of the 3rd inning with five runs in the bottom of the frame on the way to a 7-5 win on the first day of the Atchafalaya Challenge.

Denham (9-6) pounced in front with Taylor Higgins and Cade Doughty setting the table with back-to-back singles. Braden Doughty scored one run on a ground ball, but Lions’ pitcher Bo Hardin was on the verge of escaping with no more damage when he got the second out on a comebacker with two runners in scoring position.

Dillon Doyle didn’t let Hardin off the hook, though, punching a two-run single to right field. Courtesy runner Brent Huffman scored the fourth run of the game on a wild pitch.

With a nice cushion, Batty is usually tough as nails, but this time the senior struggled with prosperity.

Andrew Lege began the Lafayette 3rd with a single and stole second. Nylan Hossley reached safely when a third strike got away from DSHS catcher Braden Doughty to put runners on the corners.

Hardin laid down a bunt that turned into an RBI single for the Lions’ first run. Batty got a strikeout for the second out, but like Hardin, he couldn’t slam the door.

Joseph Battaglia smacked a two-run double, Connor Simons drove him in with a double and Jeffrey Liner generated the fifth run with the Lions’ third consecutive two-out RBI hit.

DSHS tied the game in the 5th inning on Dawson Albin’s sacrifice fly, but Lafayette regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Batty’s error allowed Liner – who doubled with two outs – to score. The Lions added an insurance run in the 6th when they converted Chris Battaglia’s leadoff double into a tally.

Hardin retired the last six Yellow Jackets, four by strikeout, to seal the win.

Boyle led the DSHS attack by going 3-for-3, while Cade Doughty was 3-for-4.

The Jackets get back to action at 4 p.m. Friday when they play at Acadiana.
