BAINS -- The 1st inning is a little early to figure out that a game isn’t going to be full of a lot of offense. But it doesn’t hurt to get something on the scoreboard as soon as possible.
That’s what Walker did against reigning Class 3A state champion West Feliciana on Tuesday. And it turned out to be enough.
The Wildcats edged the Saints 1-0 with Don Paul Smith outdueling Kyle Kirby with some late help from Lane Thomas.
Both teams managed only four hits in the pitchers’ duel. Walker (9-5) made a little more from the few knocks it got, especially in the opening inning.
Kirby plunked leadoff man Mason Inman with a pitch and Chase Jeansonne bunted him into scoring position. Inman darted to third base on Kyle Guidry’s fly ball to center field before Bailey Gautreaux dumped an RBI single to give the Cats the early 1-0 lead.
That lead persisted because Smith was almost untouchable. He never allowed more than two base runners in an inning and the leadoff hitter didn’t reach until the 7th when he walked Dylan Roark.
Walker coach Randy Sandifer summoned Thomas to the mound and he got some help when Hunter Murray threw out his second runner of the game trying to steal. Pinch-hitter Chandler Wunstel lined out to shortstop and Thomas finished off the Saints (3-8) by striking out Terry Ferguson.
The Wildcats hit the road for Lafayette this week for the Atchafalaya Challenge starting Thursday when they face Acadiana at 4 p.m.
