LAFAYETTE -- When, where and how you score runs doesn’t really matter as long as you have more by the end of the game.
Walker is starting to master that skill and Thursday presented another chance for an opportunistic offense.
The Wildcats clipped Acadiana 4-1 on the first day of the Atchafalaya Challenge, scoring all of their runs in the top of the 3rd inning with some clutch hits and Rams’ errors involved.
That was plenty of cushion for Lane Thomas, who upped his record to 5-0 by limiting Acadiana to 6 hits.
Bailey Gautreaux produced two of Walker’s three hits, including a double.
Logan Mitchell led off the 3rd and got the Wildcats (10-5) started when he reached on the shortstop error. Kyle Guidry singled and Gautreaux doubled in Mitchell. Don Paul Smith chased in the second run with a grounder to second base and the final two came around on consecutive Acadiana errors.
With the 4-0 cushion, Thomas settled in and mowed down nine of the next 11 batters he faced. The Rams (11-3) nicked him for a run in the 6th inning with a leadoff walk and three consecutive singles, but Thomas recorded three outs with the bases loaded, including strikeouts of Alex Courtier and Cole Romero to squash the uprising.
Acadiana went in order in the 7th, with Thomas logging his 6th K and getting the leadoff and No. 2 batters without any damage.
Walker will take a three-game winning streak (8 wins in last 11) into a Friday battle with Lafayette High at 4 p.m.
