WATSON -- Methodical offense and dominant pitching will carry a team a long way in the postseason.
Fitting for Live Oak, because of late, that’s exactly what the Eagles are generating.
With Gabe Schenk and Nick Cacioppo collecting two hits apiece and each of the last five hitters in the Live Oak lineup driving in at least run, the Eagles churned out a 9-1 victory against Scotlandville on Tuesday.
Bailey Simoneaux didn’t need a lot of run support on a night when he retired 18 of the first 19 Hornet batters and did not allow a hit until the 7th inning.
Live Oak (21-11, 6-3 District 4-5A) pecked away at Scotlandville (21-9, 1-8) with a single run in the 1st inning on Preston Faulkner’s sacrifice fly, RBI singles from Landon Roberts and Simoneaux in the 2nd, Cacioppo’s double in the third and a fifth run on an error.
The Eagles busted things open with a four-run 4th when Barrilleaux doubled and Schenk whacked a triple to produce three runs on two swings. Schenk came home on Lane Hutchinson’s RBI ground ball to extend the lead to 9-0.
After that, the rest of the plot line was about Simoneaux.
He struck out 10 of the first 19 batters – two each in the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th frames – and the only runner who reached in the first 6 innings was Jamaal Green with a leadoff walk in the 3rd. Live Oak’s defense erased Green on a 5-6-3 double play.
Nick Williams struck out to start the Scotlandville 7th inning and Simoneaux jumped ahead of Jacouri Hicks before the Hornets’ shortstop pumped a fly ball that found grass in center field for a double. Hicks scored on error when Roberts misplayed a ball hit his way in center, bit Simoneaux slammed the door by striking out Destin Dotson and pinch-hitter Dejon Ross – the Live Oak southpaw’s 11th and 12th Ks of a dominant night.
The Eagles close out the regular season on the road Thursday when they play at Central at 6:30 p.m. The teams are tied for second place in the District 4-5A standings at 6-3 after the Wildcats fell to Zachary on Tuesday, 15-5.
