LAFAYETTE -- Big explosive offensive innings make for nice headlines and such. Smaller, effective execution can yield pretty similar results, though.

Live Oak didn’t need many bells and whistles Thursday against Comeaux to grab control in a 6-0 victory on the first day of the Atchafalaya Challenge.

Leadoff hitter Ryan Morris chased in three runs, two with singles, but much of the damage Live Oak (10-5) inflicted came on bunts following Spartan errors or other mistakes like hit batters.

Morris and 8-hole batter Lane Hutchinson accounted for five of the Eagles’ seven hits, while Nick Cacioppo and Brendon Barker combined to limit Comeaux (10-7) to six hits in the shutout.

The Eagles got all the runs they needed in the 2nd inning with the Spartans swinging the door wide open.

Gabe Schenk reached on an error, Comeaux starter Ethan Hines hit Bailey Simoneaux with a pitch and Sal Palermo’s bunt resulted in another error that sent Schenk scampering home.

Hutchinson lined an RBI single to right field for the second run, and after another bunt, Morris chased in a third run with a fly ball.

In the 4th inning, Hutchinson dropped a two-out single to left field, stole second and dashed home when Morris pumped a single to center field.

A leadoff walk to Palermo in the 6th inning set the table for the final two runs, with Morris and Rhett Rosevear supplying the RBIs.

While Live Oak persistently chipped away, the Spartans never mounted much of a threat. Comeaux leadoff hitters reached base only once – xxxx Barrios started the bottom of the 1st with a single and was quickly erased in a 4-6-3 double play. After that, only one of the other seven other runners who reached did so with less than two outs and the Spartans did nothing with their rare chances with runners in scoring position.

Neither Cacioppo nor Baker walked a batter. Baker fanned 7 on 5 innings on the way to the win.

Live Oak takes on Notre Dame at 4 p.m. Friday in second-day action at the Atchafalaya Challenge.
