LIVINGSTON -- A detective with the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office has earned his certified fraud examiner credential from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE).

Jeff Beatty, a 12-year veteran with the Sheriff’s Office, works in the Financial Crimes Division.

“Our Financial Crimes Division has seen an uptick in these types of crimes, especially following the historic flood of August 2016,” Beatty said.

“This is just another step toward helping victims who find themselves with little to no means to be able to help themselves,” he said. “It is our job, my job, to protect those in need – to serve and protect those in my parish.”

Beatty met the ACFE’s character, experience and education requirements for the credential. ACFE is the world’s largest anti-fraud organization and provides anti-fraud training and education.

He had to demonstrate knowledge in four areas: fraudulent financial transactions, fraud prevention and deterrence, legal elements of fraud and fraud investigation.

Officers with the CFE credential have met the standards to examine data and records to detect and trace fraudulent transactions, interview suspects to obtain information and confessions, testify at trial and identify the underlying factors that motivate individuals to commit fraud.

“This type of expertise is needed, especially in a post-flood Livingston Parish,” Sheriff Jason Ard said,

“Jeff has been on the front lines of several major cases involving fraud and victims from our community,” he said.

“He knows what questions to ask, he knows what to look for and he has earned the trust of these victims who need help getting back on their feet.”
