DENHAM SPRINGS – The Denham Springs City Council scheduled a public hearing on Tuesday, Aug. 14, on a special use permit for three retention ponds totaling 7.81 acres on River Road.

The 1-year permit for the Riverbank Group will allow the retention ponds and removal of dirt from an 18.97-acre tract on the east side of River Road (La. 1032) approximately 700 feet north of U.S. 190.

The three retention ponds are 0.55 acre, 2.09 acres and 5.17 acres.

Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman Fred Banks told the council at its meeting July 11 that the commission recommended approval after it held a public hearing.

Banks said the retention ponds would help with flooding in the area.

The council also approved hiring the CPA firm of Hannis T. Bourgeois to conduct the 2017 audit of the city finances.

The engagement letter approved said the audit began July 12 and would be completed Dec. 31. The estimated cost is $3,500-$4,000.

The council authorized advertising for bids for city garbage pickup with a 5-year contract, dirt, sand and gravel, ready-mix concrete, fuel, pipe and piping products, chlorine, sulphur dioxide, quicklime and submersible wastewater pumps.

In other action, the council:

--Received the animal control report for June. A total of 49 dogs and 79 cats were taken in and 26 dogs and 60 cats were adopted. Animal control also took in $2,966.37 in donations and $2,430 for spay/neuter services.
