DENHAM SPRINGS – Public hearings have been scheduled on March 14 for two rezoning requests before the Denham Springs City Council.

At its meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 14, the City Council scheduled a public hearing for March 14 on an ordinance to rezone a tract including 120-A, 120-B, 122-A, 122-B, 124, 126, 128, 130 and 132 Stubb St., off Cedar Street, from C-3 Commercial to R-3 Multi-Family Residential.

The addresses are three apartment buildings; two have been torn down since the flood, City Attorney Stephanie Bond Hulett said.

The apartments were built when the area was zoned residential, but it was later rezoned commercial, she said.

For the two apartment buildings to be rebuilt, it must be zoned for residential development, she said.

The council also scheduled a public hearing for March 14 on an ordinance to rezone 1608 Norma Drive from C-3 Commercial to R-1 Single Family Residential.

In other business, the council approved an upgrade to the computer software that handles pay stubs and W-2 reports so it can email the W-2 information, saving paper. The cost is $3,000.

An alcohol permit was approved for Sarita’s, 151 Bass Pro Blvd. Suite A. Co-owner Scott Carlton told the council he hopes to move in within the next 60 days.

Absent from the meeting were Mayor Gerard Landry, recovering from the flu, and Councilman Chris Davis.

In the department reports, Police Chief Shannon Womack told the council that two officers have completed field training and are working shifts, while two more prospective officers are going through the hiring process.

The department also received a new vehicle to replace one lost in the flooding and it is being outfitted, he said.

The Police Department report for January showed 70 arrests were made, 747 citations issued, 137 accidents handled and 490 reports filed.

The Fire Department report for January showed the department handled four fires, causing $156,500 in losses, handled 71 rescue or emergency medical service incidents, answered four hazardous condition calls, eight service calls and had 13 false alarms or false calls.

Denham Springs Animal Control reported it took in 48 dogs and 23 cats, adopted out 26 dogs and 28 cats, had five animals reclaimed by owners and had 18 dogs and eight cats in the shelter.

It also collected $4,245 in donations, fines and fees.
