The photography of about a dozen members of the Louisiana Photographic Society (LPS) is on exhibit through Mar. 30 at the Arts Council of Livingston Parish on Hummell Street in the Antique District of Denham Springs.

On Saturday, a reception was held and three of the photographers, Ashley Herrick, the assistant director of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, Mahdi Moinul, a native of Bangladesh studying at LSU to earn a Ph.D. in civil engineering, and Arizona nature photographer Lisa Langell made presentations to an audience of about 25.

The majority of the work Herrick presented are photographs taken in her travels throughout the state, while Moinul showed photos from his many travels – he’s visited 44 of America’s 50 states during his stay here – while Langell’s presentation was almost exclusively nature photography from her home state.

“If you love to photograph nature, you also know that it’s a challenge to even capture wildlife through the lens, let alone photograph it in unique and artistic ways,” Langell said.

Moinul expressed his love for travel and photography and his passion for “creating the spirit of art” in his photography.

Some of Herrick’s photos were of obscure subjects or abstract images of otherwise familiar subjects and when she showed some through the projector, she quizzed the audience about what the photo was of and rewarded correct answers with Atchafalaya Basin coffee mugs.

The mission of the LPS is to advance and promote the art of photography in south Louisiana and to achieve that goal, the group offers a variety of programs, classes and field trips.
